"To Sleep - Perchance to Dream" (or is sleep the dream?)

Sleep problems – everyone has an opinion.  Everyone has a favourite method.  Everyone seems to have it all sussed – except you!  Every parent in the history of humankind has had this problem.  What has changed is our attitude towards it.  Somehow I feel that cave mothers were pretty happy to let their offspring sleep whenever and wherever.  In today’s world, that just doesn’t work for us – or for our children! 


So what to do? There are lots of places to go for advice – family members, friends, GP’s, health visitors.  The question is:  who should you listen to?  My own maxim for parenting has always been: “Listen politely, smile sweetly, thank sincerely, and then do what feels right for me and my child.”  However, for some initial thoughts, here are some websites that you might like to have a look at.  Find a way which resonates with you and your child.  Every child is different and what works for Janey won’t  necessarily work for Jim – even if they are twins!  Most importantly (and you don’t get to ignore this advice!) give ANY method you choose enough time and have patience.  It is the chopping and changing that causes the most distress to you and your child.  Just think of how you feel when people keep changing the rules of the game.  You don’t like it much and you are an experienced adult.  Just imagine how confusing that feels to your little one.
